Souvenirs from Australia

As you can tell from my previous post, we didn't have enough time to find our souvenirs. So I followed my viewers' advice to get some in the last minutes. Any suggestions for our next visit?!

People say Tokyo is a very expensive city to live, but we found things are even more expensive in Perth and Sydney like in New York. Let me know if we paid reasonable prices or not! lol

@ Woolworths in Perth
Arnott's Shapes Variety 10 Snack Packs - AU$3.20
Arnott's Tim Tams - 2 for AU$3
Cadbury Old Gold Original - 2 for AU$6
Nestle MILO 10 Sachets - AU$5.49
Nestle Violet Crumble - AU$1.89
Kraft Vegemite 150g - AU$3.25

@ City Supermarket in Sydney
Pods Honeycomb Bites - AU$5.65
Cadbury Caramello Koala - AU$1.00
Cadbury Cherry Ripe - 2 for AU$3
Cadbury Crispello - 2 for AU$3
Cadbury Boost - served on the plane
Soy Crisps - served on the plane

Also, we found great souvenirs while having a stroll through the Markets.

Paper Tole 3D Australian Stamps @ The Rocks Market AU$255
Not only the handicraft by Lilly but also the custom made quality framing by her husband is amazing. Most of the stamps are no longer available. Worth the price!!!
Japanese Prime Minister Abe also purchased it as a souvenir in the past.

Bottle Cap Earrings @ Paddington Markets AU$4
I bought Australian beer cap earrings.

Ikanago no Kugini 2013

I am posting this every year XD LoL

"Ikanago no Kugini" (いかなごのくぎ煮) is my favorite tsukudani (food boiled in soy sauce) made with Ikanago (sand eel/sand lance).

Ikanago no Kugini is a famous Tsukudani in Hyogo prefecture. My grandma, who lives there cooks a few kilograms of Ikanago no Kugini every year for us in Tokyo.

It is usually cooked and eaten around the end of February or early March, when the fish is about an inch long. After its season, Ikanago goes deep in the sea where is cooler. Then it goes under the sand and aestivate.

This year she sent us in the beginning of March again, along with Kuki wakame no tsukudani (stem of wakame cooked with enoki and shiitake mushrooms)!

They both go great with rice!!!

What is Cake Flour?

I receive many questions regarding the Cake Flour I use, so here is the answer!

Cake Flour, we call 薄力粉 (Hakurikiko), is soft (weak) wheat flour of low viscosity and protein content. It has a fine texture and gives cakes more tender texture than regular flour.

In my recipes, I always use Nisshin Seifun's Hakurikikomugiko.
I hope you can find this at your nearest Asian grocery store.
日清 フラワー (薄力小麦粉)

Violet has premium quality. Whiter and has finer texture.
I seldom use it because it is pricey. hehe
日清 バイオレット(薄力小麦粉)

Here I googled the Cake Flour products around you.
I hope you can find any of the below.

Swans Down Cake Flour

Pillsbury - Softasilk Cake Flour

King Arthur Flour - Unbleached Cake Flour

Premier Foods - Snowflake Cake Flour

Sasko - Cake Flour
http://www.sasko.co.za/grain/grain_flour.html

Pilmico - Wooden Spoon Cake Flour
http://www.pilmico.com/pilmico/5102:flour-soft.html

I don't recommend this (because I never tired it) but the substitute for cake flour (to make 1 cup of cake flour) is to use 7/8 cup all-purpose flour + 2 tablespoons cornstarch.

Ikanago no Kugini 2012

Again! I am posting this every year! LoL

"Ikanago no Kugini" (いかなごのくぎ煮) is my favorite tsukudani (food boiled in soy sauce) made with Ikanago (sand eel/sand lance). No wonder, it goes great with white rice! Yummy :P

This year she sent us in the beginning of March!

Also, she sent us Kuki wakame no tsukudani! Kuki wakame (茎わかめ) is the stem of wakame. She cooked it with enoki and shiitake mushrooms. Yummy XP

Next year, I will visit her and cook these with her! It would be nice to share the recipe and technique on YouTube since it varies from home to home ;)

Market O Real Brownie

My darling brought me back this Market O Real Brownie from his work.

It's a pretty popular Korean brownie in Japan and I see it out at many stores these days (like K-Pop stuff. LoL).

I thought the packages are all the same but they weren't! The pink one is definitely mine! haha
