Oatmeal Omurice (Recipe) | Japanese Cooking Video

Omurice is a very popular home cooked meal in Japan. It is a chicken fried rice wrapped with a thin sheet of crepe-like fried egg. In this recipe I substituted rice with oatmeal. The result is very satisfying. Enjoy!

Oatmeal Omurice

The oatmeal I picked at the grocery store was "Multi Oatmeal". Which can be used for both hot and cold oatmeal. Please make sure what kind of oatmeal you have, and the way you turn it into rice substitute.

Omurice (Japanese Omelet Rice)

Difficulty: Easy
Time: 20min
Number of servings: 4

Ingredients:
50g (1.8oz.) oats
50g (1.8oz.) chicken thigh without skin
50g (1.8oz.) onion
2 eggs
cooking oil
tomato ketchup
salt and pepper

Directions:
1. Dice the chicken and chop the onion.
2. Heat 1/2 tbsp. of cooking oil in a frying pan and cook the chopped onion and diced chicken until done.
3. Quickly rinse the oatmeal in a strainer to moisten, drain well, then add. Season with 2 tbsp. of ketchup and salt and pepper.
4. Beat 2 eggs in a bowl, then season with salt and pepper.
5. In a clean frying pan, heat 1/2 tbsp. of cooking oil, spread the egg mixture and make a round omelette. Before the egg is fully cooked, place the seasoned oatmeal in the middle. Fold both sides of the egg, then shape it using the edge of the pan. Carefully flip it over onto a plate. *You can use a paper towel to shape it nicely.
6. Put some ketchup on top to finish.

You can top with cheese, black pepper, and/or parsley flakes to add more flavor. My daughter says eating it with Gomashio (toasted sesame seeds and salt) is really good 👍

Gomashio (toasted sesame seeds and salt) ごましお

---------------------------------

Whole Onion Rice

Difficulty: Super Easy
Time: 1hr
Number of servings: 4

Ingredients:
2 cups uncooked pre-washed Japanese rice
1 onion
1 tbsp. consommé granules or 1 tsp. salt is ok
2 tsp. olive oil

Directions:
1. Trim off both ends and peel the onion. Make a deep cross incision on one end. Be careful not to cut through.
2. Wash rice if needed. If you are using pre-washed rice (Musenmai) you don't have to wash it.
3. Place the rice in a pot and add water to the level indicated in the pot.
4. Add consommé granules or salt, and olive oil, and mix well. Place the onion in the center of the pot.
5. Place the pot into the rice cooker. Cover and press the button to start.
6. When it's done, toss the rice lightly using a rice paddle, then serve. Onion becomes more tender if you leave it in the pot longer.

200g (7.0oz.) firm Tofu
300g (10.6oz.) onion
100g (3.5oz.) carrot
100g (3.5oz.) potato

11 Years on YouTube! Why I started? How to Cook Rice in a Plastic Bag (Emergency / Camping Food) | Japanese Cooking Video Recipe

11 years on YouTube 🥳 Time flies. Thanks for subscribing❣️Make sure to hit the bell icon so that you won't miss any of my new videos 😉 Stay tuned 💖 http://www.youtube.com/user/ochikeron?sub_confirmation=1

Rice is a staple food in Japan. If we cannot use a rice cooker, we can cook in a pot. Using a plastic bag will save dish washing at the time of disaster. Or even at camping.

Why I started YouTube:

2. Put rice and water in a plastic bag and tie securely. Soak for an hour or so for better result. If you are in hurry, you can cook it right away.
3. In a pot, place water and a plate so that the plastic bag won't touch the pot directly. Bring to a boil. Then place the plastic bag and cook on low for about 20 minutes. Stop the heat and leave in the pot for 10 minutes.

Tomato looks just like Maguro (Tuna) and Avocado with soy sauce tastes just like Maguro (Tuna) 😋

You can either serve on top of regular white rice or Sushi rice. It is up to your preference 😋

DAISO Mess Tin (How to Cook Japanese White Rice in a Camping Cookware) | Japanese Cooking Video Recipe

DAISO Mess Tin (500yen) became very popular in June 2020 and still hot now in 2021.

I recorded this video last year btw 😅
It was pretty fun to cook rice outdoor with kids.

For future use, I am keeping this in our emergency bag 👍

How to Cook Japanese White Rice in a Camping Cookware
How to Cook Japanese White Rice in a Camping Cookware

---------------------------------

DAISO Mess Tin (How to Cook Japanese White Rice in a Camping Cookware)

Difficulty: Very Easy
Time: 1hr
Number of servings: 1-2 people

Necessary Equipment:
Mess Tin
solid fuel
trivet
aluminum plate for the fuel
lighter
parchment paper
1 cup = 160g (5.6oz.) Japanese rice
200ml water
cotton gloves
towel

Direction:
1. Wash rice and place it in Mess Tin lined with parchment paper. Add water and leave for 15~30 minutes to let it absorb water. * I did not rest the rice but the result was pretty good.
2. Place the solid fuel on the aluminum plate. Place it in the center of trivet. Set fire, place the Mess Tin, and cook until the fire goes out.
3. Wear the cotton gloves and hold the lid securely. Then flip it over and leave to steam for 15 minutes. If you have a towel wrap Mess Tin to steam. *Flipping over is to cook rice more uniformly but some people say it is not necessary.
